I have been bombarded by “That” girl Tik Tok and Youtube videos over the past few months, so let’s talk about it.
What is “That” Girl?
“That” girl is someone who has their whole life together- wakes up early, works out, journals, reads books, eats clean, has a clean space, etc. It is basically the epitome of a “perfect” person.
This is another perfectionist trend taking over the internet.
The Truth about “That” Girl
All of these things sound great, and I do encourage you to take some of these on yourself if you haven’t already. There are many benefits to eating nutritious food, moving your body, and journaling. You’ll feel better mentally, emotionally, and physically if you start to focus on your own well-being. I appreciate the aspect of this trend that encourages people to put themselves first and find who they are to achieve their goals. That’s a wonderful sentiment I’d love to see more of.
The harm of this trend comes from the belief that you have to attain all of this or you’re a failure. You may not even want to admit it to yourself, but I can assure you that I’ve been there before too. You believe that this routine is vital to your self-worth. There is a pressure that people place on themselves within this trend, that they must complete all of these things on their list everyday. They are placing this pressure on themselves when it is completely unnecessary. We all desire to achieve the “perfect” life that is also aesthetically pleasing, but that’s just not realistic.
The “perfect” life doesn’t exist. There are going to be days when you sleep in because you’re tired and you skip that workout. There are days when you get caught up in other aspects in your life and your room looks like a tornado just blew through it. There are going to be days when you eat a whole box of donuts because you can’t help yourself. Not everyday looks the same. Life is inconsistent, no matter how much you try to control it. Your emotions go up and down along with your motivations. Your routines will sometimes fall apart, and that’s okay.
The people you see who show off online that they are “that” girl do not complete those habits everyday. They struggle as much as you do. Their life is as inconsistent as yours. There is no point in comparing your life to theirs. It will only make you feel shame about yourself and your “lack of discipline”. This is another example of people trying to show off online that their life is perfect. They’re only showing you the highlight reel. They don’t show you the tears they shed while trying to fall asleep at night. They don’t show you the food they binged on after restricting themselves all day. They don’t show you the day when they don’t get out of bed at all. They don’t show you those moments because they are “embarrassing”, not “aesthetic”, and not the epitome of “that” girl. Those days and moments and emotions are normal.
Let go of the pressure you place on yourself. Perfection doesn’t exist, but you can still do your best to take care of yourself. Accept the uncertainty and inconsistencies of life.
