Mid Year Book Reflection

I have been seeing the Mid-Year Book Freak out tag all over YouTube and Tik Tok so I decided to join in. I answer some of the tag questions here and go on to list all 9 of the books I have read so far this year.

Best book you’ve read so far?

Midnight Sun- 5 stars

I read this back in January and enjoyed it. I love Twilight with all of my heart, and so getting the first book in Edward’s perspective was so exciting to me. It started out slow and was hard to establish a good reading pace, but as I went on, the better it got. I ended up loving it just like all the other Twilight books.

Best reread?

Clockwork Angel- 5 stars

Murder, demons, and a sarcastic dark-haired love interest? This is all I ask for from a book. I read this book in middle school and it immediately became my all time favorite book. I hadn’t read it since then  so I decided to pick it up. I also want to dive into Chain of Gold and Chain of Iron and wanted a refresh on the characters and plot. I was nervous going into this book because I had such high expectations. There are many books I read when I was younger that I loved but hate now. I read the prologue and went “Ah, yes I see why this is my favorite book”. This book is still one of my favorite books of all time.

Biggest disappointment?

Serpent and Dove- 3 stars

I waited months to get my hands on this book and when I finally read it, I fell into a 4 month long reading slump afterwards. The book wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t as captivating and exciting as I hoped/expected. I didn’t connect much with the main character, I found her almost childish. The love interest was not interesting at all. The storyline itself was enticing, but wasn’t executed well.

Biggest surprise?

Glass sword- 2 stars

It was a surprise and not in a good way. I loved Red Queen when I read it last year. I rated it 5 stars, and proceeded to purchase the entire series in hardcover because I expected the rest of the series to be just as good. Oh, was I wrong. Glass Sword was extremely boring. The entire book was about Cal wrestling with who he was and what he stood for, Mare whining about her life, and both of them trying to collect a bunch of newbloods to form an army to defeat Maven. It was an extremely repetitive book and felt like I got nothing out of it at the end. I am sure that Victoria Aveyard could’ve combined all the sequels into a single sequel. There is so much unnecessary reflection and detail that makes these books drag.

Fictional crush?

Will Herondale

As of right now, and forever, it is Will Herondale. I loved him when I was thirteen and I still love him now. He’s sarcastic, charming, and is hot/cold towards the main character/love interest. What more could you want?

A book that made you cry?

Clockwork Prince- 5 stars

This book made me cry 3 DIFFERENT TIMES. I never cry. This is one of the two books that have ever made me cry (Crooked Kingdom is the other book). I am such a Wessa stan and this book tore my heart out. Cassie Clare always seems to do that in her books. Clockwork Prince was painful to read but I couldn’t stop turning the pages.

What books do you need to read by the end of this year?

I just read Clockwork Princess in two days… so I am now onto Chain of Gold. I want to take my time with it and enjoy it, but I do plan on finishing it this month at least. After that, I’ll read Chain of Iron and eventually get to the rest of my TBR. My TBR includes Crescent City, From Blood and Ash, and The Invisible Life of Addie Larue. I’m not sure what will come after, but these are my plans for now!

The rest of the books I have read so far:

King’s Cage- 3 stars

She is Maven’s prisoner. That’s literally the whole book, it’s so boring.

War Storm- 3.5 stars

There’s a lot of political talk and Cal finally chooses a side. This book is the second best out of the entire series after Red Queen, but it still wasn’t that great.

Rule of Wolves- 1 star

King of Scars was a huge disappointment for me because I went in expecting it to be about Nikolai (it’s titled after him) and it was all about Zoya- a character I hate. Rule of Wolves was just as bad, if not worse, than the first one. There was a lot of unnecessary things added to the book (*cough cough* Kaz Brekker), a lot of last minute tying together, endings that didn’t make any sense, and many questions left unanswered. Leigh, I love you girl. Crooked Kingdom changed my life, but this duology is just not it. Also, how dare you make the 3rd SOC book about Zoya.

Clockwork Princess- 4 stars

This was my least favorite book in the trilogy sadly. There were points that were strange and almost unbelievable. They were very convenient for Cassie Clare, and so I didn’t enjoy them. Overall, it wasn’t a bad book. I don’t hate the ending as much as I remember hating it, but I still didn’t like it. I would still highly recommend this series since it is still my all time favorite.
